Atlantic hurricane safety tips

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and the northeast is no stranger to heavy-hitting, warm-weather storms.

Hurricanes pack winds and rain that can result in significant property damage and extended periods of power outage. If a hurricane is in your area’s forecast, follow the tips below to prepare yourself and your property.

Download local news and weather apps before the storm to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in your community.

Charge your phone ahead of time and keep a portable power bank (or better yet, a solar-powered charger) nearby so you can stay informed and in-touch if you lose power.

Stock at least three days’ worth of non-perishable food items, drinking water, medicines, and a manual can opener. A more comprehensive disaster supply checklist can be found at https://www.ready.gov/kit.

Never run a generator inside a building – doing so puts you at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. If you are considering purchasing a generator, do so well in advance. Once a storm is pending they can be difficult to locate.

Use battery-operated lighting in the event of a power outage. Candles present a hazard and must always be monitored.

Ensure you have copies of your important documents and contact numbers on hand. Secure critical documents in a weather-proof lockbox or safe.

Secure outdoor items, such as patio furniture, or bring them inside.

Take care when cleaning up after a storm. Injuries can occur when removing or restoring fallen trees and working in flood waters. Never start cleaning up without receiving a safety notification from authorities.
